An ATA "Style" Shipping Case is one that has been constructed employing the guidelines specified by the American Transportation Association (ATA).

While there is no governing body to "certify" ATA style cases, manufacturers test their cases to the standards provided by that association, and these cases can fall into on of three categories:

CATEGORY 1:
Materials: Light weight metals, rubber, and plastics.
Usage: Minimum 100 trips by air carrier.

CATEGORY 2:
Materials: Leather, glass, wood, cardboard, fiberboard.
Usage: Minimum 10 trips by air carrier.

CATEGORY 3:
Materials: Not specified.
Usage: Expendable.

• ATA Case Hardware -
The heavy-duty hardware on ATA cases must be recessed into the case. The recession of the latches, handles, and even the wheels helps to protect the hardware in transit. Nothing protrudes or sticks out from the case to be damaged during shipping.

• Vibration Test -
Cases are vibrated vertically and horizontally at various frequencies for a total of three hours.

• Drop Test -
Cases are dropped on their top, bottom and both sides. 160 drops at a height of 30 inches on a reinforced concrete slab.

• Drop and Tumble Test -
Fully loaded case in a tumbling device that simulates 100 roundtrips on an airline, 100 revolving falls/600 total falls.

• Water Spray Test -
60 minutes with medium water intensity.

In addition, ATA cases must survive other stringent shock and temerature tests.
